Southport Pest Control
Pest Control Timeline- What to Look for and When
Early Spring- Termites
As temperatures in Wilmington, NC start to rise, so do the termite swarms. Depending on the weather, subterranean termites usually begin swarming in March and April. This area of North Carolina is considered to have a high potential for termite infestation so it is important to take necessary steps to avoid damage from these insects. If you do discover termites in your home or business, professional exterminator services may be necessary.
May and into the summer- Ants
North Carolina is home to more than 190 species of ants, including Imported Red Fire Ants, Odorous House Ants, Little Black Ants and Argentine Ants. These ants become a problem when they move inside homes and other buildings in search of food, water and shelter. May is the time of year to begin lawn and household treatments to prevent ant infestations.
June, July and August- Fleas and Cockroaches
In addition to ants, summer is the time to be on the lookout for fleas and cockroaches. Fleas generally enter dwellings on dogs and cats, and take up residence in carpets and furniture. Their eggs generally hatch during the hot humid weather that is common in Southport and Wilmington, NC throughout the summer months. Pest control methods for fleas include using a proper flea control product on pets for prevention and professionally treating carpets and furniture with products containing insect growth regulators. Cockroach infestations are most common when temperatures are above 80 degrees and pose a serious problem. Roaches can carry many harmful diseases and will feed on almost any organic matter. It is important to be on the lookout for cockroach eggs and feces or the roaches themselves, especially in the kitchen!
September, October and November- Small Rodents
As the seasons change in Wilmington, NC and the weather starts getting colder, we humans aren’t the only ones who don’t want to face the falling temperatures. Small rodents, such as mice, rats and squirrels can become household pests as they head inside to look for warmth, shelter and food. Homeowners can take precautionary steps to try avoid attracting these rodents, such as making sure no food-related items are left out, but often times these pests make a new home indoors and professional pest control is required. Be on the lookout for evidence of these pests in areas you don’t often check, such as rarely-used drawers or beneath appliances in the kitchen and basement. These animals can carry diseases and destroy food and other items inside, so it is important to get rid of them as quickly as possible.
