Silverfish Control

Silverfish are common pests that may already be living in your home. They love paper and fabrics and will search for these materials while hiding out in basements, walls, bookcases, attics, and other dark spaces. Often, silverfish will make their way into your home through cardboard boxes, milk cartons, or even some furniture items.

How to Prevent Silverfish from Entering Your Home

When you are dealing with insects, it can be extremely difficult to keep the little critters out of your home. In some cases, infestations can go beyond your stray insect here and there. Why not take a few steps to try to prevent them from finding their way into your home?

1. Seal up your food: The last thing you want is to find one of these crawling around in your cereal or other cardboard enclosed food that you keep on the shelf. 

2. Reduce the humidity in your home: Silverfish love moist and humid environments and are often seeking out moisture in your home. This is why it is not uncommon to find these creatures in your sink or bathtub. Make sure your leaky pipes are fixed, your bathroom has good insulation, and cracks are sealed up using caulk. 3. Clear clutter in your home: Old newspapers, books or magazines are heaven for silverfish as they feast on these materials. If you need to save paperwork or files, make sure they are stored in air-tight bins.

4. Try essential oils: Silverfish have been reported of not liking the smell of various oils. A few oils are cinnamon, lavender, cedar, citrus, and basil. 

5. Traps: Another way of keeping these critters under control is through the use of traps. If all goes well, you will hopefully not even see them until they are in the traps. Traps can be a very effective method if the previous prevention methods do not seem to work.

One final note, though these methods can help work in preventing silverfish from entering and infesting your home, it is no guarantee and some may slip through.
